Colors & Finishes

Yes — your impact windows and doors come in color.

Impact-rated doesn’t mean builder-white only. Every American-made frame is finished in a durable, salt-air-rated factory color, and the glass itself can be tinted for heat, glare, and privacy — so the window works with your architecture instead of fighting it.

What they are

Impact windows, explained without the jargon.

An impact window is a permanently installed window built to survive direct hits from hurricane-borne debris — a roof tile, a tree branch, a piece of patio furniture moving at storm-force speeds. It does this with two panes of glass laminated to a clear interlayer (think auto windshield), seated in a structural aluminum or vinyl frame, and tested against airborne debris in a certified lab.

The marketing name changes. The certification is what actually matters:

Everything we install at GlassIQ carries all three.

No shutters to deploy. The protection is on every minute of every day — including the random Tuesday-afternoon thunderstorm in August when a 2x4 comes off a neighbor's renovation project.

American-made impact windows

How they work

Three layers of protection, one quiet window.

Every certified impact window we install is built around the same three engineering principles. The configuration changes, the construction doesn't.

Laminated impact glass

Two panes of glass laminated to a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or SentryGlas interlayer. When struck, the outer pane may crack — but the membrane holds every shard in place. No air entry, no projectiles inside the room.

Reinforced frames

Aluminum or vinyl frames engineered to resist pressure differentials of 70+ psf. The frame is what keeps the entire assembly anchored to your home's structure when wind tries to pull it out.

Certified anchoring

A Miami-Dade NOA isn't just for the window — it certifies the entire installation, including fastener type, spacing, and substrate. Our crews install to the NOA spec your county inspector signs off on.

Benefits of high impact windows

Six reasons Florida homeowners upgrade.

Impact windows do more than survive a storm. Every day they’re in your home they’re filtering UV, blocking noise, holding in conditioned air, and making your house harder to break into.

Hurricane Protection

Built for Florida’s toughest weather conditions, impact windows resist strong winds, airborne debris, and severe storms while protecting your home and family.

Noise Control

Enjoy a more peaceful living space with impact glass that minimizes outside noise from traffic, construction, neighbors, and everyday outdoor activity.

Energy Savings

High-performance insulated glass maintains indoor temperatures more efficiently, reducing heat gain and supporting lower cooling costs year-round.

UV Rays Protection

Special laminated glass technology filters harmful UV rays, protecting your interiors, furniture, flooring, and décor from discoloration and sun damage.

Security & Safety

Impact-resistant windows add an extra level of home security with durable laminated glass that is significantly harder to penetrate than traditional windows.

Property Value Advantage

A smart long-term upgrade that improves curb appeal, increases home value, and can reduce homeowner insurance premiums.

Impact windows vs hurricane shutters

If you've debated the two, here's the honest comparison.

Both are code-legal for hurricane protection in Florida. The difference shows up in everything that happens between storms.

  Impact Windows Hurricane Shutters
Protection mode Always on. No prep before a storm. Must be deployed manually before each storm.
Insurance credit Largest wind-mitigation credit. Typically 20–40% off the wind portion of premium. Smaller credit; varies by shutter type.
Daily benefits Lower AC bills, UV blocking, noticeable noise reduction, UV-filtered furniture protection. None — windows behind shutters remain ordinary glass.
Curb appeal Invisible from outside. Looks like a premium window. Visible tracks or panels around every opening.
Lifetime cost Single install. 20-year warranty on the laminate is standard. Motors, tracks, and fabric panels eventually need service or replacement.
Resale value Strong. Commonly recovers 70%+ of cost at sale. Modest. Buyers see them as a maintenance item.

Insurance + ROI

Your wind-mitigation credit pays you back every year.

Florida insurers are required to offer discounts for verified wind-mitigation features. Impact windows trigger the largest single credit in the form — typically a 20–40% reduction on the wind portion of your premium. Your wind portion is usually the largest line on a Florida policy.

After install, we issue the documentation your insurer needs: the Miami-Dade NOA, the product approval sheet, and the inspection-pass record. Most carriers update the policy and refund the prorated difference within 30 days.

Insurance savings, AC savings, noise reduction, UV protection, and resale value commonly combine to recover the install cost across 7–10 years — earlier if financed at competitive rates.

Typical savings stack

  • 20–40% wind-mitigation credit on insurance
  • 10–25% drop in summer AC costs (laminated + Low-E)
  • ~70% cost recovery at resale (national average)
  • 99%+ UV blocking — protects floors, art, fabric

Questions

Plain answers to what people actually ask about impact windows.

Still wondering something? Call 941 310 7028 or include the question on your estimate form.

What's the difference between impact windows and hurricane shutters?

Impact windows are permanent, factory-built units with laminated glass that absorbs storm debris on impact. Hurricane shutters are removable panels you deploy before a storm. Impact windows protect 24/7, qualify for larger insurance credits, improve daily energy efficiency, and don't require last-minute install work the day a hurricane is approaching.

How long does impact window installation take?

From signed contract to installed, plan on 8 to 12 weeks. Manufacturing is the longest phase at 6–10 weeks. Permitting takes about a week. Install itself is 1–3 days depending on window count. We schedule install around your calendar.

What impact window brands does GlassIQ install?

Our impact windows and doors are made in the USA. We recommend the series and glass package based on your home, budget, and priorities. Every product is Miami-Dade certified and meets Florida Building Code (FBC) and HVHZ requirements.

Are aluminum or vinyl frames better for impact windows in Florida?

Both work in Florida. Aluminum frames are stronger and handle larger openings, which makes them the typical choice for sliders, picture windows, and oversized configurations. Vinyl frames have better thermal performance and are usually less expensive — a fit for smaller openings and energy-focused retrofits. We'll match the frame to the opening during your free estimate.
